On the road

Live navigation, what to do when your charge does not match the plan, and finding a charger where you are.

5 minute read

A plan made in the kitchen meets reality somewhere around the second junction. Traffic, weather and your own right foot all disagree with it. This is what WayEV does about that while you are actually driving.

Starting the journey

Starting a plan switches to a driving view: turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance, your next charging stop, and a live comparison between the charge you actually have and the charge the plan expected you to have by now.

That comparison is the number to watch. If you are tracking above the prediction you can shorten a stop or skip one. If you are below it, better to know at junction 14 than at junction 28.

The screen stays awake while you navigate, and the layout is built for a phone on a cradle — large type, the next instruction dominant, everything else out of the way.

When reality and the plan disagree

Re-plan from wherever you are. Tell WayEV your current charge and it rebuilds the rest of the journey from that point, with live charger status as it stands now rather than as it stood when you set off.

Worth doing when you have been sitting in traffic with the heating on, when a headwind has been eating range, or when you simply drove faster than you meant to. It takes seconds and it is far better than arriving at a charger you can no longer reach.

If a charger turns out to be broken

Re-plan on the spot and you will be routed onwards using current status. Live feeds usually know within minutes, so the replacement stop is chosen with the failure already taken into account.

Finding a charger where you are

Charge Now answers a different question from journey planning: not “where should I stop on the way to Leeds” but “where can I charge, here, soon”.

It lists nearby chargers with their live status, power and price, nearest first, with the map alongside. Tapping a site on the map highlights its card and vice versa. Useful when plans change, when you are somewhere unfamiliar, or when you just want a top-up while you do the shopping.

Favourites and alerts

Save the chargers you rely on — the one at work, the one at the end of your usual motorway run — and WayEV can tell you when one of them changes status or price. For a charger you depend on regularly, knowing it went out of service before you set off is worth more than any amount of clever routing.

Live battery data, if your car offers it

With a compatible OBD-II adapter, WayEV can read your actual state of charge rather than asking you to type it. That removes the most common source of drift in any plan, which is an honest guess made at the start and never corrected.

Entirely optional. Everything works without one — you just tell us the number yourself, and re-plan when it stops matching.

That is the set. If something here does not match what you see, tell us with the Help & feedback button in the corner of any page — a real person reads every one, and the page you were on comes with it. Back to all guides.
